St. John

St. John is the most complex character in Jane Eyre. Today, we are going to interview St. John to find out the answers.

?: Hello, St. John. Welcome to the Daily Novel, today, we want to ask you some personal questions. What word would you give to describe yourself?

x: Selfless, of course. I help poor families and tell people the story of god. I give courage to those who are in devastation.

?: …… But some readers say you are selfish. You manipulate Jane, making her feel bad about things that she should not feel bad for. You want everybody to fill your expectations.

x: I have to say that this is not true. We could help thousands of peasants in India to live a better life, and I believe that god would be pleased if I married Jane.

?: What about your sisters? Do they also treat people this way?

x: Diana and Mary are too young to see the world in god’s eyes. They treat men childishly, not at all sincere. God would not be pleased if a churchman also acts acted in this way.

?: (Can you not say god in your answers? God doesn’t exist!) OK, so you said that god would also have commanded Jane to marry a person who she did not love?

x: No, no. You misunderstand me, madam. We are free to love of course, but marriage is a thing to profit you on in work and partnership.

?: I do not think you are right, St. John.

x: God wouldn’t be on your side if you don’t think it’s right.

Editorial note:

I really like this, Pluvia! This is a very original way to answer the question. Your grammar is perfect, and it is fun to read. And your St. John sounds just like the St. John from the novel!^_^

Jane Eyre

Jane Eyre had a significant effect on the literary world. It is one of the first books ever that has a heroine; a woman who is equal, even stronger than the male characters. This week the Novel Weekly is going to have a special report on Jane Eyre.

It is in the top 10 of the BBC’s Big Read list, and the gothic love story is still popular today. It is not just about love; there are ghosts, spooky houses, and madness all in this novel. So if you do not appreciate love, you could still read this book. Many readers say that this novel is the best haunted book ever!

Jane Eyre is a book that challenges gender in justice in Bronte’s time. Men and women are equal in ability; women can do anything that men can do. Jane Eyre at the end of this story manages to be a superior woman, who surpasses Mr. Rochester.

The characters are interesting too. Many people seem to be doing nice things on the surface, but deep down they are not. Like Mr. Brocklehurst, St. John Rivers, Mr. Rochester… There are also good characters who believe in god, like Jane’s friend, Helen Burns.

So that’s it for this week. Next week we are going to talk about Fahernheit 451.

Editorial note:

Well done. Another good review. You’ve covered the basics very well, and given the reader just enough information to make the curious, without revealing too much. That is the secret of a good book review.

Fahrenheit 451

So why do characters in this novel believe books are bad?

It is because the government wants to control how its citizens think about the world. They do not want them to think too deeply, like philosophers. The government would like to keep everybody dumb, so they can have ‘supreme control’.

Many governments were like that in ancient China, like that of Qin Shi Huang Di. He wanted to take medicine which could let him live forever. But the scholars could not make it, after all, it did not exist in the first place! Qin was outraged, so he burnt all the books and many scholars too, just because he did not want to be over-thrown. Governments that want people to stick to their political ideas, burnt all of their rivals’ books, which is ironically similar to what Joseph Stalin did in the 1950s to the people of the Soviet Union.

These actions are wrong. It would not make people like the government at all. Rather, it might lead to worse conflicts.
Teacher’s comments: Great answer, Pluvia. Some nice word choices in here, and excellent grammar again. One thing is for sure; throughout history, people who become too powerful, often become completely crazy! Maybe people aren’t built for having too much power.
